Sergei Uvarov was a true patriot, and loved the Soviet Union with all his heart and soul. He dedicated his life and career to the strengthening of his nation and the ideals for which it stood, making use of his natural affinity for engineering and the creation of weaponry and other technological devices to advance the Soviet Union’s interests and influence around the world. All that came to an end however, when the Soviet Union’s “Cold War” with the United States ended in the late 20th century.

When Gorbachev’s Glasnost and Perestroika initiatives began a more liberal reformation in Russia’s relationship with the West, Uvarov felt betrayed by the nation he had so ardently defended. Over the years following the end in tensions, and as the once-mighty Soviet Union disintegrated and fell into a sea of unchecked corruption, Uvarov fell into despair. Secluding himself in one of his former weapons facilities in Siberia, Uvarov severed all ties with his former life.

For years Uvarov remained in hiding. Russia itself continued to degrade into chaos as criminal elements exerted a tighter and tighter grip on virtually every aspect of life in the former Soviet Union. Capitalism now reigned, but it was an unchecked capitalism unfettered by the rules (such as they are) of the West, and it wasn’t long before the wealth of the new Russian Republic was concentrated in the hands of a small number of massively wealthy oligarchs.

Enraged beyond reason, Uvarov’s anger and frustration reached such a boiling point that it drew the attention of the old Slavic god, Svarog. Svarog recognized the potential for power in Uvarov, and felt a kinship of the forge with him. The old god used the last of his waning might and granted Uvarov’s request for the power to return his nation to its former glory. His power now depleted, Svarog then vanished into memory.

With this newfound power came purpose, and Uvarov pledged that his would be the will upon which the future of the Rodina would pivot. In honor of this, he took the name Fulcrum.

Fulcrum spent nearly a decade constructing the weapons and technologies he would need to execute his will, including a suit of armor designed to augment his already-formidable Svarog-given physical might. And from his newly- renovated headquarters in Siberia, he would launch his mission to return the former Soviet Union to its position of power in the world.

It was during this period that the hero known as the second Steel Wolf came to his attention (see Steel Wolf II). This hero’s standing with the people of Russia caused Fulcrum to consider the possibility that Steel Wolf might inspire the Russian proletariat to reclaim what they had surrendered when the Soviet Union fell. But over time, Fulcrum instead came to feel like the hero was, in fact, betraying the very ideals which he was supposed to champion. And when Steel Wolf defected to the West, he swore revenge.

Fulcrum first made himself known when he appeared in Moscow and confronted Steel Wolf, condemning him for abandoning his homeland in favor of the decadence of The West. During the battle between the two, Fulcrum stated that he had once hoped that the hero would have served as a source of inspiration to the people of the former Soviet Union, and serve as the unifying tool that Fulcrum himself would need to turn the path of their mutual homeland back to what he considered the glory days when the Soviet Union was at its strongest. The battle between the two was intense, but ultimately Fulcrum chose to withdraw. Fulcrum continues to plot a return to what he considers the true Soviet Empire from behind the scenes, manipulating those in power at the highest levels of the Russian Republic.
