Humboldt, Saskatchewan school teacher Jeff Burton was on a night-time field trip with his students observing a meteor shower when a large meteor crashed near their location. When Jeff investigated, he was amazed to discover a large, undamaged staff with a glowing globe on its end embedded into the meteorite.

Feeling a strange compulsion, Jeff grabbed the staff and was instantly bathed in strange cosmic energy. Jeff found himself high in the air above the crash site, flying. After composing himself, Jeff was finally able to return to the ground, staff still in hand.

Jeff decided to use this newfound power to aid his fellow Humboldt citizens, battling the weirdness that now seemed to be drawn to him like a magnet. Taking the name of Auroraman (due to the colored lights that the staff generated when using its power), Jeff became a local hero, and was soon hailed as the new "Super Power of the Prairies".

But the staff itself, and its origins, still remain a mystery.
