In 1935, Ikano Kato was at a Tokyo port when a bizarre accident nearly drowned him. His life was saved by Britt Reid. Kato accompanied Reid back to the United States. In 1936, Reid created the persona of the Green Hornet, and Kato became the masked chauffeur and partner, driving the Black Beauty.
During World War II, Kato's nationality was concealed; his records were altered to show him as Filipino, a necessary step to protect his identity during those turbulent times. In 1946, he married Oshura Oshi, a Chinese woman who changed her name, possibly due to the complex political climate of the era. Together, they had three sons: Hayashi, Kumura, and Hatami. Oshura passed away in 1954.
In 1963, Kato married Marie Granier, and they had a daughter named Mishi Kato. Mishi became the partner of Paul Reid, the fourth Green Hornet, and later took on the alias Crimson Wasp.
