Origin
Black Mariah is the head of a white slavery and prostitution ring in Bete Noire. In addition to running this ring, she occasionally gather information worldwide for the Magistrate, Doctor Juris.
A Chovexani witch, Black Mariah has the ability to suck the life out of a person or burn them with a simple direct contact of the skin. Even her tongue can burn. All those who work for her owe her absolute loyalty, or they will pay the price. She forbids all her subordinates from frequenting the Jurors bar and quickly detects and punishes those who would betray her.
She’s in a relationship with one of Juris' employees, Shadow Boxer. At the time, she was given the mandate to kill him, but her powers had no effect on him. It was the first time she had met someone insensitive to her gifts and she fell in love with him after that.
Character Evolution
The Fallen Angel, who else?
Things were going well for Black Mariah before Lee came to put a spoke in her wheels. During their first encounter, outside the Jurors bar, Lee wanted to defend a man that Mariah was assaulting. Black Mariah burned her hands and forearms, but Lee had time to break her nose.
Lee was then hired by a woman forced to prostitute herself for Black Mariah, to defend her. Through her intervention, Lee will manage to put an end to this network. For Lee, this woman is nothing but a sadistic monster who has no respect for humanity. Lee will cast a gypsy spell on Mariah that brings her nothing but misfortune, in Bete Noire. Mariah was forced to leave the city for a while, the time to find someone capable of canceling this spell.
Upon her return to Bete Noire, instead of wanting to get revenge on Lee, Mariah instead had the idea of calling on her for an important problem that concerns her. A man named Wilde had entrusted her with the mission of stealing a precious religious relic, namely the last piece of wood from the cross of Jesus Christ. While Lee was with his group of students on the soccer field, Mariah appeared in the distance, at the edge of a forest. Lee left her group and entered the forest to see what she wanted from her. Speaking to her in her thoughts, Mariah explains that she stole a religious relic that she must deliver in a few days to a certain Wilde. In exchange for the relic, Mariah wants Lee to negotiate for her something that this man possesses. Lee does not want to do business with a murderer and refuses.

However, Lee is curious to know more about this relic and this Wilde. She will later land at her house and surprise her while she’s with Shadow Boxer. After immobilizing Shadow Boxer, she will put Mariah to sleep and take her home to torture her until she tells her more.
After a few hours of torture, Mariah will finally speak. The man who wants the relic, Wilde, has managed to take possession of Black Mariah's spiritual death by reaching out to the ether. She cannot die as long as he holds it. But she feels threatened by him too because he can kill her at any time. To prove her point, Black Mariah pierces her body with the cast iron poker that Lee uses for torture. She then removes it, still alive.
After explaining everything and telling her where the relic is, Mariah asks Lee again if she wants to help her, but she’s refused again. Lee lets her go however and Black Mariah will walk for a few hours, in bad shape, before Shadow Boxer's car stops in front of her by chance. He has been looking for her for 24 hours, since Lee kidnapped her. For her part, Lee sets off to retrieve the relic, which would be in a Mansion.
A few days later, Black Mariah receives a call from Wilde. He’s in town to retrieve the relic and he arranges to meet her at Bumper Ruggs' rooming house. Even though she no longer has it in her possession, Mariah accepts the meeting. She goes to the meeting point in the evening and there she informs Wilde that it’s probably the Fallen Angel who now has the relic. Wilde has never heard of the Fallen Angel, but she arrives at this moment. Lee finally seems determined to help Black Mariah recover her "death". Wilde refuses, but Lee threatens to cast a spell on him that will slowly devour him from the inside if he refuses to give her what she wants. After explaining to him the effects he will feel, he becomes afraid and agrees, before leaving the house. Mariah is finally released and returns to Shadow Boxer. It’s later learned that Wilde and Mariah are brother and sister.
Weeks later, Mariah doesn't know that Shadow Boxer attacked Lee at her house and that he believes he killed the baby she was carrying. She also doesn't know that he then went to confide in Juris and that the latter killed him, since he had just killed his child without knowing that Juris was the father.
Juris didn't tell Mariah right away that Shadow was dead, he told her that he sent him out of town for a few days, on a mission. But a few weeks later, he's going to summon Mariah to the cemetery to show her Boxer's grave. He's going to lie and tell her that Lee killed him. Mariah senses that Shadow is probably dead, but she doesn't believe that Lee is responsible. She's not going to confront him about his lie. Instead, she's going to talk to Lee while she's in an alley near the Jurors. She explained to her that Juris accused her of Shadow's murder and together, they agreed to kill Juris, when the time is right.
When Juris was able to transfer his powers to Jude, his firstborn child, he took his car and wanted to leave Bete Noire. Lee agreed to accompany him, but temporarily. As they reached the city limits, Black Mariah stood in the middle of the road. Juris accelerated, determined to run her over. Lee left the car, and the vehicle skidded before hitting Black Mariah and crash into a tree. Lee and Mariah then witnessed Juris' death.
Wilde's Return
When the city is threatened by the Red Horses, Wilde takes the opportunity to return to Bete Noire in order to avenge the humiliation he suffered more than 20 years ago. He will take the appearance of Malachi, actual Mariah lover, and approach Mariah, before stabbing her savagely.
Mariah will manage to enter the Jurors and Lee will carry her to one of Dolf's rooms. The real Malachi enters at this moment and offers his help to heal her.
The Recapture of Bete Noire
When the hierarchy sought to seize control of the city, Lee, in a desperate bid to stop them and save her son, led a full-scale assault on Jude’s tower alongside Black Mariah, Asia Minor and his men. But she arrived too late—Bete Noire had already fallen into the hands of Jubal-Moloch.
Despite the destruction, Jude survived, and with Lee and Black Mariah, they managed to escape beyond the city's borders. Determined to find a way to defeat Moloch and reclaim Bete Noire, they embarked on a perilous journey to another city of power—the fabled City of Life.
After days of travel aboard Black Mariah’s plane and boat—battling a demon, a sea monster, and a massive shark—the trio became stranded on the shores in the Middle East. There, an active volcano rumbled on the verge of eruption. Trusting his instincts, Jude climbed to the summit and hurled himself into the fiery depths, with Lee following without hesitation. Black Mariah, caught off guard, stumbled and fell in after them.

Instead of meeting their end, they found themselves in the City of Life, the very place they had been searching for. Within its ancient walls, they encountered Nimrod, the city’s sole guardian and an original sinner. He revealed that their salvation lay within the Tower of Babel, where a sacred sword awaited them. Determined, the trio ascended the tower, braving its many traps until Lee finally seized the sword. The moment she raised it to the heavens, a bolt of lightning struck, instantly transporting them back to Bete Noire. Armed with the legendary weapon, they confronted Moloch and ultimately triumphed.
