Guillaume Batiaque hires the private detective Josef Mantovani to find his brother Emile's murderer. Guillaume is a fan of old noir stories and believes in the detective more than he does himself.
However, Mantovani soon finds himself embroiled in a complex scheme instigated by the head of the New Orleans Grendel krewe, Renute, to kill all the known descendants of Charlemagne, the ancient French king. Renute, who is a descendant of Charlemagne himself, has heard a voodoo prophecy that whoever is Charlemagne's heir on the 800th anniversary of Hunter Rose's death will become the reincarnation of Hunter Rose. The Batiaque family are Charlemagne's most direct heirs, and so Renute kills them all off, first Emile and then soon after, Guillaume.
Guillaume's cousin, Simone, and her unnamed boy, then become the official heirs. Mantovani and a group of Grendels eventually solve the mystery and kill Renute.
