Malachi is a guardian angel, just as Lee was before she was cast down and sent to Earth in the city of Bete Noire. Malachi acted as her mentor, and they had a romantic relationship. He was the one who prevented Lee from intervening to save the little girl under her protection. Since that moment, Lee has resented him.

Malachi will arrive in Bete Noire and lie to Lee about the reason for his presence. He will tell her that their boss—God—has forgiven her for what happened and that she can resume her role as a guardian angel. In reality, he has been sent to Bete Noire by the hierarchy to prevent Lee from interfering with the power transfer process between Juris and his son Jude. Angels occasionally can transfer between the angelic realm and the real world.

While in Bete Noire, Malachi is romantically involved with Black Mariah.

When he sees Lee trying to convince Jude to leave the city, he will grab her and drag her underwater to kill her. After several minutes of struggle beneath the water, Lee will ultimately gain the upper hand over him.

When the town is threatened by the Red Horses, Lee wants to intervene and protect Jude and the town. Malachi will once again intervene and prevent her from acting.

Dissatisfied with Jude's work as a magistrate, the hierarchy, through its new agent Gilles de Rais, will invoke ancient powers and recruit Jubal to regain control of the city. They can count on the presence of Wilde, Black Mariah's brother who had a vengeance to execute. But their greatest asset is the demon Moloch. Moloch has returned to Earth through the body of Jubal, looking to seize Jude's mantle as the magistrate of Bete Noire.

Lee, helped by Asia Minor and his men, has led a big strike force on Jude tower to stop them and save her son. Malachi, now on her side, will try to help her but will die when Moloch cuts off his head. Affected, Lee will take the head in her hands and kiss it one last time.
