Following Jon Arryn's death, Ser Hugh was knighted by King Robert Baratheon in memory of his friend and mentor. Although considered a suspect of Jon Arryn's poisoning by Lord Eddard Stark, Ser Hugh could not be questioned due to receiving fatal injuries, from Lannister bannerman Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane, during the jousting competition of the King's tournament.
