Stan has said that these two were originally humans in the pencil version of their first appearance in Critters #3. He modified them slightly in the inks to turn them into monkeys.

Biography
These two intreped forest workers appear in the background frequently, sometimes interacting with the main cast. They have often moved events forward, usually unwittingly. They are frequently found complaining to each other that samurai are crazy.
