Nothing is known about Agent "!"'s early life, or how he got his powers.

Creation

Agent "!" was created by Grant Morrison and Richard Case. He made his first appearance in Doom Patrol #49.

Major Story Arcs

Nobody for President

Due to his special ability to be completely unsurprising despite his outlandish appearance, Agent !'s goal in life is to find the element of surprise. He helps free Mr. Nobody from the Painting that Ate Paris, and becomes a member of the newly-formed second incarnation of the Brotherhood of Dada. He participates in Mr. Nobody's campaign for president. Agent ! is killed by John Dandy and his government agents along with the rest of the Brotherhood of Dada. After he is shot down, the jet plane escapes from his chest, severely surprising the agents. In his dying moments, Agent ! realizes that he had had the element of surprise within himself all along.

Powers and Abilities

Agent ! comes as no surprise. He is able to stay inconspicuous anywhere, or sneak up on anyone. Even though he wears an outlandish costume, nobody is ever surprised that he is there, which allows him to do ridiculous and illegal things. This is because people around him don't find it surprising that a man with an exclamation point on his head and a bird cage housing a jet-plane with bird legs for a torso is walking towards them.

Doom Patrol

A very different version of Malcolm appears in the third season of Doom Patrol, during Rita's travel to the past. Rita formed a relationship with Malcolm during their time in the Sisterhood of Dada. He was eventually killed accidentally on Madame Rouge's orders. Malcolm's powers and alter ego name is at no point mentioned, instead he can be recognized by the bird that lives in his chest. He returned in the series finale to greet Rita in the afterlife.
