Origin

No one knows Azrael's origin, not even Azrael himself. The only thing that is known about his origin Azrael being an alien whose spaceship crash-landed sometime in the past over Mount Michelson in Alaska. His ship buried itself in the frigid Alaskan ice, and it lay undiscovered for an undetermined period of time until scientists from S.T.A.R. Labs discovered it, and the cryogenically frozen body of the winged alien being which lay within.

Creation

Azrael was the creation of writer Marv Wolfman and artist Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. His first appeared in the pages of Tales of the Teen Titan #52 April 1986 published by D.C Comics.

Using the research of the late scientist Elinore Stone, S.T.A.R. scientists successfully brought the spaceman out of his frozen state and into a world in which he didn't belong. Azrael possesses no memory of his former life, his planet of origin, his mission in space, or his true name. He was revived and soon met and fought the New Teen Titans. However once he met the former Titan Lilith Clay he fell hopelessly in love with her. Lilith reciprocated those feelings only somewhat but as an empath was confused by her connection to Azrael was hers of but a projection of his. After making both Azrael and the Titans stop fighting Azrael was allowed to come to Titans Tower to assist him in finding his home and identity. Azrael who was extremely obsessed with Lilith did not want to leave her side in any case, rather than ever learning about his past. However shortly after staying with the Titans for a time Lilith was captured by her mother the goddess Thia. Azrael would join forces with the Teen Titans and the Titans of Myth and help defeat Thia and her forces, freeing both Lilith and the Gods of Olympus. Azrael was devastated when Lilith was offered to stay on Mount Olympus by the Gods to become one herself and rising into her destiny. Azrael along with the Teen Titans were returned back to Manhattan right after the ceremonies on Olympus never to see Lilith again.

Azrael would quickly leave the Teen Titans after arriving back to Earth distraught after Lilith choose to stay on Olympus without him.

The winged man ran into the cult of the Church of Blood. He would easily be tricked by the Church of Blood into thinking that he was Azrael, the angel of death. After a time Blood's Church eventually fell, and Azrael learned he was duped and had merely been used. The Titans had gotten involved with the defeat of the Church as well as the freeing of Azrael with the aid of the empath Raven. It was he who dropped the broken-spirited Brother Blood off at a monastery when the villain's mind was broken by Raven. Azrael vowed to watch over Brother Blood, even in his broken state.

Azrael later aided the Titans again during the Technis Imperative conflict but has not been seen since that time.

Powers

Azrael is an alien who's body may seem in every way human has various physiological deference's. He has natural birdlike wings on his back which allow him directional flight, although the exact speeds have not been determined . He has exceptionally enhanced agility and utilizes this while in flight making it very difficult to capture of hit him as a moving target while in flight.
