Kareli had a latent metahuman gene. One night, when her father was in a bad mood, she went for a walk to not end up victim to one of his outbursts. While walking on a trail near her house, she heard to people approaching her. She got nervous and tried to hide as it was late at night, but she lost her footing over a cliff and hurt her ankle. Her whimpering attracted coyotes which finally got her stress levels high enough where the metagene activated. Unfortunately, the effects it had on her appearance caused her to be rejected by her family and her town. While on the run from an angry hateful mob, she was rescued by The Doom Patrol. She would go on to aid the Doom Patrol in their new metahuman rescue operation, finding misunderstood metahumans and give them a place where they can be trained in their new unstable abilities.

Creation

Beast Girl first appeared in Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 by Chris Burnham and Dennis Culver. Her name is an obvious allusion to early Doom Patrol member Beast Boy, who has since gone on to greater fame as a Teen Titan. Previously, Doomsday Clock #5 included a Beast Girl on the roster of a Doom Patrol inspired team from India called The Doomed. That character never made an appearance, but Beast Girl shares her real name (Kareli) with towns in India so they might be related.

Eventually, the Doom Patrol had recruited enough new metahumans to create a new team called the Flex Force. To demonstrate their progress, their coach, Flex Mentallo, put together a friendly game of capture the flag. Unfortunately, this game was interrupted by a new Brotherhood of Evil. While the two teams join forces to defeat the Brotherhood, Willoughby Kipling gives Robotman an important message. The Brotherhood was a distraction so that General Immortus could dig up Dorothy Spinner's grave and use her power to channel The Candlemaker.

Kipling tried to ward Robotman against Immortus' new magic, but Robotman was in desperate need of backup. Crazy Jane was unwilling to leave The Shelter, so she convinced The Quiz, who Immortus had rescued and enslaved from the Painting That Ate Paris, to switch sides. Combining their powers allowed them to defeat this new Candlemaker, who Quiz than threw into The Bleed.

This feat brough the attention of Peacemaker and his peacekeeping robot sentinels, which have been tracking the Doom Patrol since they crossed paths with General Blanche. With an adjustment to his fight-or-flight response from Beast Girl, Degenerate fought off the giant robots long enough for Doom Patrol to make their getaway.

Absolute Power

Beast Girl was with the Doom Patrol field team, working with Aquaman and Tempest in Maine when Amanda Waller and her new Bureau of Sovereignty made their move against all metahumans, armed with an army of Amazos that didn't just copy powers but stole them. Aquaman and the Doom Patrol were left powerless by the Amazo codenamed Depth Charge.

Beast Girl ended up on Themyscira, along with a lot of the other depowered heroes, where they fell in under Nightwing's leadership. He assigned the Doom Patrol, among others, to follow up on various distress signals to de-powered heroes in stuck in the field. To aid them, they were armed with weapons from the JLA's old armory. By the time they return to the island, Jon Kent had been freed from Waller's control, and Batman had secured a scientist named John Starr, who could reverse the Amazos' effects. This made Waller's supermax prison headquarters vulnerable.

Beast Girl joined the others in a counterstrike. After the Amazo effects were reversed, Beast Girl was one of the heroes who got the wrong powers back. She received the ability to shapeshift into other animals like Beast Boy.

Ever since getting shapeshifting abilities similar to Beast Boy's, Beast Girl had taken a keen interest in the animal kingdom. She went on an extended worldwide safari searching for the most unique and strangest animals there were. Her next stop was The Register Island Nature Preserve. She was accompanied by Negative Man, who lost control of their flying ambulance when they made it to Register Island airspace. They were brought down by Dr, Samuel Register, the Zoo Keeper, whose powers Beast Girl received after the Amazo attack.

Members of the Doom Patrol came to her rescue with the teleportation powers of Titan, Cyborg. Unfortunately, whatever knocked out the ambulance also knocked out Cyborg's cybernetics, trapping them on the island as well. They determined Register was controlling his giant purple creatures with a special radio signal, which was also jamming their technology. So, the team split up. Rita and Larry kept the creatures busy, and Beast Boy and Girl kept Register busy, while Cyborg and Robotman tracked the radio signal and took out the transmitter. Once the signal ended, the creatures turned on Register, with one purple dragon swallowing him.
