Origin

Little is known about Byron Shelley's early life, save that he was raised by intellectuals. The cause or source of his powers are unknown. He used his powers as an eccentric super villain, often absorbing bystanders. He was invited by Mr Nobody to join the newly-created Brotherhood of Dada.

Creation

The Fog was created by Grant Morrison and Doug Braithwaite. He made his first appearance in Doom Patrol #25.

Major Story Arcs

The Painting That Ate Paris

The Fog is sent to Japan along with Sleepwalk to retrieve the Quiz. Returning to Mr Nobody, he joins the team in stealing the Painting That Ate Paris. After the Brotherhood traps Paris and themselves in the painting, he confronts and manages to absorb Crazy Jane. Her split personalities destabilize his internal structure, however, and he is forced to regurgitate her. After the Brotherhood and the Doom Patrol successfully defeat the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, he elects to remain inside the painting alongside the other Brotherhood members.

Powers and Abilities

Fogg is able to transform himself into a cloud of smoke which can absorb any humans that come into contact with it. Their minds remain forever trapped inside him, and are able to interrupt his speech even when he is in human form. He appears to have an unlimited capacity for humans he can absorb. It is unclear if he can gain powers through absorption, or if he can absorb non-humans.

Other Media

Doom Patrol

A genderbent version of The Fog now named Shelley Byron appeared in seasons three & four as a member of the Sisterhood Of Dada. After Laura's betrayal, Shelley would become the leader of the group. Her powers are altered to no longer be fatal, instead minds going into her fog can leave whenever they want, instead of a prison, it's treated as a place for metahumans to be free of human cruelty. Shelley would have a brief flame with Crazy Jane, although their relationship wasn't resolved before the series ended, with Jane ending with Space Case instead.
