Creation

Screenmore was created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff for Detective Comics #298, the issue in which the second Clayface (Matt Hagen) also made his debut.

The Challenge of Clay-Face

Bennington Screenmore makes a $100,000 donation to charity on the grounds of his estate with Batman and Robin collecting the money for charity. However, Matt Hagen arrives and fights with the dynamic duo before stealing Screenmore's donation.

If a Man be Made of Clay

In the retelling of Matt Hagen's first appearance, Screenmore plays the same role as he did before. Finding $157,000 underneath his bed, Screenmore decides to give it to the "Orphan's of Psychotic Criminals' Victims Fund". However, Matt Hagen steals the money after Screenmore drops it when recoiling in horror at Hagen's clay-like appearance.
