Mackenzie Bock earned the nickname "Hardback" due to his insatiable reading habit.

After No Man's Land story arc he was promoted to Captain of OCCB (Organised Crime Unit) in the Gotham City Police Department. He is an extremely capable police officer, although somewhat wary of the vigilante heroes like Batman.

Since the retirement of Commissioner James Gordon, Bock has received a promotion to Chief of Police.
