Origin

Shirley Stewart was always an equal right activist even before the birth of her first-born John Stewart. She later had a daughter Ellie Rose but she died, and Shirley never truly got over the loss of her baby. When John returned to Earth after losing his Green Lantern Ring, he moved in with Shirley to take care of her, because it is revealed Shirley is in the late stages of dementia.

After the latest event in Green Lantern, John has moved home with Shirley. She knows he is a Green Lantern and keeps trying to get him to go back to being a hero but John is worried about his mother.

John lives at home with Shirley and spends the next day fixing things around the house. Shirley keeps trying to convince him she is fine but then slips into one of her bouts of dementia. This causes John to make a construct of Ellie, Shirley's dead daughter to help Shirley calm down.

Later, when John gets an invite to the Steelworks, he takes his mom with him. He knows that Steel is offering him a job but John will only move to Metropolis if Shirley will move with him. Before she offer her opion the train they are riding on is attacked by Varron and Shirley is badly injured.

She is in a coma for a few days, and when she wakes up, John needs to leave her to stop the Revenant Queen. Now John has a new more powerful Green Lantern Ring is able to make a more permanent Ellie construct. Later Shirely and Ellie are seen reading a book about a knight, whose story is paralleling John's battle with the Revenant Queen.

Green Lantern War Journal: The Builder

Shirley and the Ellie construct seem to be happily playing and reading stories back at Shirley's home, but it turns out they never left the Steelworks and Ellie made the house appear with the use of her powers.

Shirley is then tormented by Varron disguised as her abusive ex-husband. She keeps thinking it is part of her dementia but when Ellie sees him too, the pair are attacked. It looks like Varron maybe be able to kill Shirley but Ellie, learning that Shirley knew Ellie wasn't real, transforms into Green Lantern Armor and weapons.

Shirley is able to hold back Varron long enough for John to get back to Earth. John seemly kills Varron again but Shirley is infected with the Dark Star energy.

John is able to cure his mother but she still dies from her wounds. She then becomes the voice inside John and Ellie's rings.

Shirley is the voice in John's Green Lantern Ring encouraging him to let Ellie explore being alive and trust that she knows what she is doing with her powers.

In this universe, John Stewart lives at home on the farm with his mother. Ellie Rose is a construct but unlike Earth-0 Shirley always knew she was a construct and although she never told the Ellie construct, John always knew she knew.
