History

The origin of Shrapnel is unknown. He came into conflict with the Doom Patrol while on a murder spree. Celsius, the leader of the Doom Patrol, encased him in a solid block of ice. He broke free from the block of ice and the shards hit Celsius point blank and hospitalized her. Lodestone was unable to magnetize him and Tempest figured out that Shrapnel is a series of organic cells creating a single consciousness that feeds on the blood of victims.

He was a member of The Suicide Squad for a mission. He has also had run-ins with one of the incarnations of Hawk and Dove and the Birds of Prey.

Shrapnel joined Alexander Luthor's Secret Society of Super Villains. He was one of the villains sent to planet Salvation. He has joined the Cyborg Revenge Squad and was a member of the Cheetah's III Secret Society of Super Villains when Genocide was created. Wonder Woman defeated him.

Powers and Abilities

The assassin known as Shrapnel is a mutated human whose flesh and bone have been transformed into hundreds of separate razor-sharp pieces of metal. He is able to project those metallic scales into explosive bursts, mentally guide their path, and recall them into his body when damage is done.

In other media

Shrapnel appeared in the animated series "Batman: The Brave and the Bold". In the episode "When OMAC Attacks!", the Global Peace Agency sends Batman and OMAC to an Eastern European country to apprehend General Kafka, a dangerous war criminal experimenting with an unstable liquid metal. OMAC jumps the gun and attacks the General, causing an accident with the liquid metal that turns Kafka into Shrapnel. Shrapnel then attacks an American city in retribution for his village that was destroyed. While OMAC and Shrapnel duke it out, Batman learns that a villain named Equinox was the one who engineered this scenario, planning on causing Shrapnel to destroy the city to make up for the destruction of Kafka's village. The fight between OMAC and Shrapnel accidentally causes a meltdown in a nuclear power plant, and Batman was forced to expose himself to the radiation to end the meltdown. OMAC was then able to defeat Shrapnel by tiring him down, and then he was able to save Batman's life after reverting back to Buddy Blank.
