Sister Mary Catherine has been searching for an ancient religious relic for much of her life. This relic is actually the last piece of wood from the authentic cross of Jesus Christ. Mary Catherine had gotten herself into serious trouble, since she wasn't the only one interested in it.

Lee had helped her escape from the killers who were chasing her, with the help of Asia Minor and his men. This nun was actually Lee's first "client" when she arrived in Bete Noire.

A few years later, Lee was able to get her hands on the relic after torturing Black Mariah, who had confessed to stealing it. She then went to Massachusetts to give it to Sister Mary Catherine.

This relic is said to have the property of emotionally completing the being who touches it, of allowing them to experience the most powerful emotion that inhabits them. When Lee told her how she had known where it was, by torturing Black Mariah, Mary Catherine threw the object into the fire. She explained to Lee that it was now stained with her impure blood and had lost its original properties. The angry sister then forced Lee to redeem herself, atoning for her sin. If she did not, Mary Catherine threatened to go to Bete Noire and force her to do so.

A year later, Lee arrives again at her convent to entrust her with the baby she has just given birth to, Jude. She believes that this will be the best place to take care of him, she wants to return to live in Bete Noire and does not want to put him at risk.

Twenty years later, Jude is a man of God and still lives with the nuns while waiting to be entrusted with a church. Slate will go to the convent to meet Jude and explain many things to him about his past, his parents and Bete Noire. Jude will blame Sister Mary Catherine - now Mary Elizabeth - for lying to him all his life and he will leave for Bete Noire.
