After being a police officer in the corrupt city of Maristan (Africa) for a few years, Slate came to live in Bete Noire. Intelligent and having a very strong deductive mind, he was hired by Doctor Juris to be his private detective. Curious and perceptive, he's informed of everything that happens in Bete Noire, including the secret relationship that his boss has with Lee. He took the liberty of hiding a microphone in his boss's office, to be sure he knew everything.

He has a respectful relationship with Lee, they will help each other in different situations. For example, he will confirm to her that Black Mariah is not responsible for the death of a student in her class, because she was out of town when she was killed. He'll also help her kill the invisible entity that attacks young woman. For his part, Slate will ask for Lee's collaboration to protect his boss, when he knows he's threatened by the hierarchy. And later he'll tell Lee hos to attract the attention of this hierarchy.

Slate learned that Lee had placed her son, Jude, in hiding in a convent in Massachusetts. Now 20, Slate went to meet him to give him many answers about his past, his parents, and the town of Bete Noire. Jude will become the new Magistrate of the city.

By informing Jude of these elements, Slate feels like he is doing his duty to serve his city. Jude will not be a good Magistrate for Bete Noire, however, and the hierarchy will eventually try to replace him.

When Wilde wanted to avenge his humiliation 20 years ago, he returned to Bete Noire to stab his sister Black Mariah. She took refuge at the Furors and Malachi was able to treat her wound, with the help of Dolf and Ezil. Dolf hates Black Mariah and sees her as an enemy to Lee and as she recovers from her intervention, he prepares to suffocate her with a pillow. Slate will however interrupt his gesture and force Dolf to talk to him by pushing him to the ground and preventing him from moving by placing a chair on him. Dolf will shout at Ezil to come help him and, a few minutes later, Ezil will enter the room and shoot Slate several times, to kill him.
