Varron breaks the Earth quarantine, put in place by the United Planets, on a personal mission to find the Green Lantern Energy hiding there. This causes him to confront John Stewart, who tells him he doesn't have a ring, but when Varron threatens his mother, Shirley Stewart, John shows his true power, of the Green Lantern energy inside himself. John beats the rookie Lantern and forces him to flee and return with back-up.
Varron, Kolltek and another young rookie Green Lantern, return to Earth and track Light Energy to the Amazon Rainforest. Assuming it is John Stewart they attack but are ambushed by the Revenant Queen and her army of Radiant Dead.
Varron and the other Lantern's are killed and brought back as Radiant Dead. Varron is then sent to find John Stewart again and kill him with his new power.
This time Varron is too much for the former Lantern and is able to sneak attack him. Varron stabs John with Dark Star energy and this starts to infecting John. It looks like it maybe the end for the former Lantern and in a final attempt he cuts off Varron's ring arm. This only slows down the Radiant Dead but it long enough for Caolán Sheperd to swoop in and distract Varron so John can get away.
Later, when John Stewart and Caolan track down the Radiant Dead to the Amazon, Varron is again one of the Radiant Dead that attack the Green Lanterns. This time John uses his new Green Lantern/Dark Star powers to destroy Varron for good, or so it seems.

Varron was seemingly destroyed by John Stewart, but he returns as the Star Shroud. He tracks down John's mother Shirley and torments her by taking the form of John and Ellie's father Henry. He chases her around what Shirley things is her house but is really a construct made by Ellie Stewart.
Varron fights back Steel and Natasha Irons and creates a barrier around the house. It looks like Varron may kill Shirley, but Ellie comes to the rescue. She creates a Green Armor and weapons that allows Shirley to fight back. This holds Varron back long enough for John to return to Earth and destroy Varron once again.
