During the period known as the Cold War, the lost civilization of Atlantis, long believed to be mere myth and legend, made itself known to the surface world. Enraged by the careless atomic testing by surface dwellers, Atlantis’ elite soldiers began attacking and disabling military facilities the world over. Paying no heed to national borders or allegiances, the Atlantean warriors made short work of their land-dwelling counterparts.

Eventually, an armistice was reached. The United Nations brokered a deal between the Atlantean and the nations of the surface world to halt oceanic testing of atomic weapons, while covertly officially recognizing the Atlantean kingdom as a world power. In the closing decades of the 20th century, Atlantis re-emerged onto the world stage when Aquatica Oceana Aquaria, long fascinated with the surface world, officially took her place as ambassador to the United Nations.

Aquatica not only served as a representative of her people to the General Assembly, but also served in the role of protector as a member of the United Nations Special Task force. She served with distinction up to the event known as “The Decimation”, where she suffered injuries forcing her to return to Atlantis to recover.

When her former teammates independently re-formed the team known as The First Guard, Aquatica proudly joined. It was as a member of this team that she and longtime teammate Diversion finally admitted their love for each other, and married.

Currently, both Aquatica and Diversion have retired from full-time adventuring, though Aquatica continues to represent her people’s interests in the United Nations and aid the First Guard as missions require.

Aquatica possesses the typical attributes of a member of the Atlantean race, including gills which allow her to extract oxygen from the water, an enhanced physiology and durability, enabling her to survive and operate at the crushing depths and water pressure changes of the ocean, an enhanced circulatory system allowing her to withstand the freezing temperatures of the deep, and specialized vision more sensitive to the green portion of the spectrum, which allows her to see in the murky depths.

Like all members of her race, Aquatica possesses superhuman strength, and can lift (press) approximately 40 tons while on land, above average for a female member of her race. Her superhuman strength also accounts for her greater-than-normal swimming speed. Her normal cruising speed is around 55 knots (63 mph), but she can generate short bursts of up to 434 knots (500 mph), though doing so leaves her physically drained for brief periods afterward.

Aquatica’s dense musculature also grants her a high level of durability and protection against harm. She has been seen to survive relatively unharmed from being bitten by sharks, as well as suffering only little damage from most medium-caliber bullet fire.
