Born in prehistoric times during a cosmic event when all the planets in the universe came into alignment, Zzed was cursed with immortality. Over the centuries, he grew weary of his existence and eventually decided to destroy all life in order to end his own. His schemes were repeatedly thwarted by the original Airboy, but Zzed escaped to try again.

Many years later, Zzed (under the telepathic influence of Nine-Crocodile) devised his most elaborate plan to end the universe when the "total eclipse" once again came into alignment. Heroes from multiple realities joined together to prevent the disaster. Due to the interference of Tachyon, the unleashed cosmic power did not kill Zzed, but instead brought him great enlightenment. Altered both physically and spiritually, Zzed joined forces with the other heroes in order to stop Nine-Crocodile, the true mastermind behind Zzed's scheme. The reformed Zzed rechristened himself "Doctor Eclipse."
