Syd Viking (or Biking), Gringo was a western hero, created in Spain, a wandering cowboy with idealistic tendencies, sworn to protect the weakest, like Mexicans or Indians, but prone to some laziness.

Origin

Syd Viking was a foreman in a Western ranch, before a new owner (Mr. Price) arrived, who wanted to fire all the Mexican workers on racist grounds. Syd Bicking opposed him and was fired too. His girlfriend Conchita was attacked by Price's men, and had to escape the region, abandoning Syd. Price wanted to kill all the Mexicans and their families, destroying the local dam. Syd stopped him at the last time, killing him in self defense. Still, he was rejected by the Mexicans, because of his white American ancestry. So he took the name that they had given to him "Gringo" and used it as a new alias, becoming a new wanderer seeking to solve injustices.

Creation

Gringo was created by Selecciones ilustradas, for various international publications. Carlos Gimenez and Suso Peña drew the character. He had an approximate 70 non-contiguous adventures and was published of irregular manner in various countries where Selecciones Ilustradas sent their stories. Some stories only are found in certain languages.

It was published as "Ringo" in Australia by KG Murray.
