Agent Buttercup is a lion with cybernetic enhancements. He has a job at the USDA and had been partnered with agents such as John Colby.

Creation

Agent Buttercup was created by John Layman and Rob Guillory for their series Chew.

When John Colby is reassigned to the USDA his first partner is Agent Buttercup, but the pair don't get along, because John isn't really a cat person. That does not stop Director Peñya from sending the partners out on cases.

One of their first cases is a counterfeit ring, where the fake hundred bill dissolve 24 hour after being used. John uses his computer brain to figure out that the bills are made of vegetables and that there have been unusual amounts of those vegetables sent to Kopy Kat, a photocopy store.

Agent Buttercup and John investigate, and when the employees attempt to pull a gun on John, Buttercup jumps in and protects his partner. The pair make the bust and it looks like the pair are getting along.

But back at the USDA headquarters Director Penya gives Buttercup all the credit and yells at John feeling like he is trying to steal the credit from his animal partner. This puts a wedge between John and Buttercup that can never be overcome as later John is reassigned to Poyo.
