Little is known about Blackjak's past, his true origin or the source of his powers. Gifted intellectually, his monumental ego and hedonistic ifestyle have him a rendered him unknowledgeable and easily manipulated man. Blackjak is a womanizer who lives well beyond his means on stolen credit cards and loot. Blackjak originally tried out to be on Youngblood, but didn't make it through basic training, as he didn't have the right attitude for the job.

When the crime czar Vendetta created her team of mercenaries The Regulators, Blackjak was hired to lead the team. Blackjak led the team both under Vendetta's control and later when the team left her. After a series of bad luck from his former employer, Blackjak encounters the mysterious Scandal at a bar and was smitten by her. When the two encountered some thugs who tried to rob them, Blackjak witness Scandal's abilities as a power chameleon at first hand. Impressed by her abilities, they become lovers and Scandal joins the team.
