Origin

The Oasis
The Oasis

All that is known about Carapace is rumor. It is rumored that Carapace is 118 years old and that he used to live on Earth during a time when there was still hope for the planet. It is believed that he is a protestor who stood up to his government but was imprisoned for it. Better-World recruited him out of prison to be the warden of turtles, which were augmented in size to ship resources up and down the rivers, on Exodus, the terraformed planet intended to be the new home for Earthlings. His arrest record was sealed by the corporation like most of the wardens. When Better-World decided to abandon Exodus, they planned on taking with them The Wildlife Grid, the mainframe for the neural network that the warden helmets worked on. Carapace led a revolt against them, securing the Wildlife Gird in a hydroelectric damn, dubbing it The Oasis.

Creation

Carapace first appears in Rook: Exodus #3 by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok.

The Wildlife Grid

Carapace was approached by Dire Wolf (the wolf warden). She believed that Better-World was not coming back and that it was up to them to fix Exodus. She wanted to find the terraforming engine and fix it. In order to do that, she needed to assemble the wardens. She needed Carapace's The Wildlife Grid to do so. Unfortunately, they needed three helmets to triangulate a universal network and speak to all the wardens.

This forced Dire Wolf to reunite with Rook (the blackbird warden) and convince him to stay. After sending the message, they got the attention of Ursaw, a mercenary sent to clean up Exodus who had presumably killed the bear warden for his helmet. He laid siege on The Oasis along with Warhog (a loyalist wearing the stolen wild pig helmet) and Kaa (the snake warden). Wolf and Rook leave The Oasis to defend it, but this is a distraction.

Ursaw had stolen the grid and took Carapace prisoner. Wolf tried to stop him but was taken as well. They were ultimately rescued by Rook, who finally committed to their cause completely. His flock of crows knocked Ursaw off his own roaming fortress, putting him in a coma. They secured Ursaw's body since the bear helmet was fused to him. The trio then agreed to go look for Bloodhound, Dire Wolf's father and creator of the world engine and wildlife grid.

The Search for Bloodhound

One by one, Carapace and his new warden allies tracked down the rest of the wardens to manually turn on their communicators and bring them into the fold, while also tracking Bloodhound. Carapace stayed behind at The Oasis to run the network. They first connected Matterhorn who warned that Bloodhound had given in to the instinct influence. He had already killed the engineers who were travelling with Matterhorn.

  • Communication: They come equipped with two-way communicators to other Wardens
  • Instinct Influence: The neural connection is two-way, and the animals can sometimes influence their own instincts on to their wardens. The scientists who developed the tech believed that the animals would be too weak minded to have a significant effect on humans.
