Dace was created by Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren in Black Cloak 1.

Major Story Arcs

Dace is a lowborn Elf who lives in the Narrows section of Kiros. She lives in an apartment above The Salty Crow, a bar with a reputation for prostitution. According to the bartender, while Dace likes to party she is not a sex worker.

One of her friends is Renna, a stripper who is a member of the resistance.

Dace falls in love with Freyal III of Sidra, the heir to the throne. After Freyal’s breakup with Phaedra Essex, to whom he was engaged, he starts spending time away from the royals and among the common people. He meets Dace and they start a relationship.

Dace is jealous of Phaedra and knows she can’t marry Freyal because of class, but stays with him anyway.

After Freyal finds out about a conspiracy headed by his mother Queen Taline, Taline reluctantly comes to his and Dace’s apartment and lethally stabs him. As he dies, Dace comes in. He says he is going to take some Dracona poison to make it clear to the investigating authorities that something strange is going on. His hope is that Phaedra, now a Black Cloak detective, will discover the queen’s conspiracy when she investigates his death.

He begs Dace to stay alive and hide herself with Renna. However, after he dies, she takes the poison as well.

The queen’s magician lackey, Lysanthir, sees this happen. He takes her body and dumps it in the Lagoon to hide it. However, a Maid (mermaid) named Yanha bites it and dies from the poison herself. The Black Cloaks find all the bodies and, as Freyal hoped, eventually figure out what the Queen has been up to and arrest her.
