Major Story Arcs

Jonos, also known as Jono, runs a small ramen counter located in The Trees neighborhood of Kiros. He is a long-lived being known as a Raiju.

When they were young, Phaedra Essex and Freyal III of Sidra were regular customers of his.

Years later, after Freyal is murdered, Phaedra, now a Black Cloak investigating his death, returns.

Most of the inhabitants of The Trees are afraid of Black Cloaks but Jonos is too old to worry about such things, or to leap into hiding. She gets her old regular meal. Theron II of Pax, her partner, who is from The Trees, joins her. They discuss the case and then leave to look for a note Freyal may have left in a hiding spot in The Trees.

Years later, after Phaedra destroys a machine run by the Queen that cruelly absorbs magic from the cute animals known as Taka, which leads to widespread loss of magic throughout the city as well as fires and floods that drastically damage the most vulnerable areas such as The Trees, she returns to Jonos’s stand.

Her ex-girlfriend, Nida, told her that Jonos’ father was reportedly one of the last beings to fight a Dragyern sometime around the final war, before the modern era of Kiros. Dragyern are huge creatures thought to be extinct, but Phaedra and Pax saw one at a crime scene.

Phaedra, on the trail for more information, comes to talk with Jono. The last time she visited, everyone ran because she was a Black Cloak. Now she is no longer a Cloak but carries the weight of being responsible for destroying the neighborhood. She has not been to the trees for five years, since the fires. However, Jono welcomes Phaedra and Pax, and several of Pax’s children, once again.

Unfortunately, he does not remember any specific information about the Dragyern, other than tall tales, and he does not think they will help her. He is happy to see Pax and his family, who have become regulars. Pax’s kids love the place.

As they prepare to leave, Phaedra notices that one of Pax’s daughters, Joya, had her wings burned off in the fire, and is distraught at the results of her actions. However, Jono makes the point of telling Phaedra that he is still glad to see her before she goes.
