Joya was created by Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren in Black Cloak 3.

Major Story Arcs

The oldest fairy child of Theron and Kei Pax, she met Phaedra Essex, her father’s Black Cloak partner, when she was only a few years old. At that time, she enjoyed flying around the house. Her mother said she didn’t like being dirty and thought it was beneath her to crawl on the floor.

When Phaedra destroyed a machine that sucked the magic out of the cute animals known as Taka, it caused a huge fire and flood throughout the most vulnerable parts of the city of Kiros, which had unknowingly been reliant on the machine’s magic. Joya lost her wings in the fire.

Joya and her siblings enjoyed hanging out at Jono’s ramen stand in the Trees. They came often enough that Jono would give them freebies.

Years after the fire, Auberon, Zin, Joya, and Typha all came with Theron when he met Phaedra at the stand to discuss a case. They all harassed him for money for the arcade. Joya was withdrawn.

Phaedra and Theron visited Theron’s family’s home to work more on the case. The younger kids were all formally introduced to Phaedra and some of her other friends then. They also brought a big group of Taka who had now proliferated since the fire.

When Phaedra mentioned their current mystery, the kids all got excited to solve it. According to Theron, they all loved crime. Joya, however, sulked off to the side, reminded of the loss of her wings. Kei, meanwhile, offered everyone a munificent amount of food.

Phaedra left her old set of mech wings for Joya, who was afterwards very excited to be able to fly again.

As the mystery deepened and became more dangerous, Phaedra and Theron decided to bring all their friends and family to a safehouse to protect them. Kei and all her kids joined their other friends at the old house of Phinneas III of Thane—Phaedra’s father, and the Prime Minister of Kiros.

They were excited to be there because it made them feel rich. They also wanted to continue to help solving crimes.

Phaedra and Theron end up solving the mystery (without the kids’ help!). Afterwards the kids hang out with Pax, Theron, and some other friends on a public platform in the trees, all of them flying around and having a good time, free of worry. The last shot of the characters in the series is Phaedra and her girlfriend appreciating the fact that no matter what other challenges they faced, Phaedra was able to bring Joya’s joy back by giving her the mech wings.
