When Liam received a call from Gabriel Winter, a friend he hadn’t seen in over 20 years, he was immediately uneasy. Along with Yoshi, Amanda, Darren, and Gabriel, he had been part of the small group of friends who first discovered the Undernet as teenagers—a chapter of his life he had hoped to leave behind forever. Back then, Liam and Amanda were in a relationship.
Now, a breach in the Undernet has occurred, and Gabriel needs his old friends to help him find a way to contain it before it’s too late. To bring them together, he covers their first-class plane tickets and invites them to a fully rented three-story hotel in Pennsylvania, which he has turned into their headquarters. The hotel is located near the site where 15-year-old Gibson Lane has just massacred nearly 60 of his neighbors. Gibson's brother, Ellison, had learned of his brother's murders and went to prison to talk to him, but instead saw his brother killed in front of him by PH34R.
After extracting Ellison from an FBI interrogation with the help of his lawyer, Sydney Brant, Gabriel brings him to the hotel. There, he entrusts Liam with the task of interrogating him. Under the threat of torture, Liam ensures that Ellison is not under the Undernet’s influence, as his brother Gibson had been, and gathers information about what led Gibson to commit the murders. These murders were just the beginning, there are now several mass shootings taking place around the world.
Later, Liam, Darren, Yoshi and Amanda walk in on PH34R stabbing Gabriel in one of the hotel rooms. Darren forces her to back away by aiming his gun at her, but Gabriel is already critically wounded. Some of them want to kill PH34R on the spot, but Gabriel, with his last strength, insists they let her go—he believes they will need her to put an end to everything. PH34R flees, leaving Gabriel to die in Liam’s arms moments later.
Before taking his final breath, Gabriel reveals that he has just shut down the internet worldwide, leaving only one remaining network to continue the fight: w0rldtr33.net.
