Major Story Arcs

Master Lysanthir is a prominent magician who works with Queen Taline and the royals of Castle Kiros. He works strongly to do whatever is necessary to prop up the reign of the queen, the strength of Kiros, and mostly importantly himself.

He works often with Master Ividor, who is the senior magician of the court and older than Lysanthir. However, Ividor does not seem to be in the Queen’s confidence when it comes to secret activities in the same way that Lysanthir is.

At some point it becomes clear that the innate magic that Kiros has always relied on is failing or running out. The Queen and Lysanthir come up with a plan to replace that magic with the magic that exists within the city’s beloved Taka, a small furry race of creatures. They build a machine that absorbs the Taka’s magic and leaves them black and withered. They throw them in a chasm, where they slowly work their way up to the surface, where they are known by the populace, who don’t recognize them, as Wraiths.

Over the years, the Taka disappear from public life and are believed extinct. However, the Queen and Lysanthir are breeding them in secret under the castle.

The Queen’s son, Freyal III of Sidra, becomes disillusioned with royal life and begins slumming in the Narrows with a low Elf girl named Dace. He also somehow finds out about the Taka. The Queen can’t allow him to let anyone else know, so she meets him and stabs him with a Dracona Dagger. Freyal laces his wounds with a rare poison, which he believes his ex-fiance and current Black Cloak detective, Phaedra Essex, will notice as unusual. Dace takes the poison as well and they both die. Lysanthir had followed the Queen and sees all of this. He takes Dace’s body to the Lagoon and dumps it. He does not tell the Queen.

Dace and Freyal’s bodies are found and Phaedra and her partner Pax do start an investigation.

Either Lysanthir or the Queen send an assassin to kill Phaedra with another Dracona Dagger but she survives, thanks in part due to her part-Dracona heritage and in part due to a magic healing spell that her old friend and palace magician Valorie cast on her for a different injury earlier that day. Lysanthir and Ividor summon Valorie to find out what kind of magic she used, to figure out how she survived (it is unclear if Ividor knew who attacked her). Valorie explains that it was a spell she invented, and Ividor is impressed.

He and his assistant, Belorr, process some more Taka through the machine. They argue over how careful they need to be. Lysanthir’s arrogance shows.

He hears Pax and Phaedra, who are spying on him, and pins them to a wall with some magic. He plans to run Phaedra through the machine when the Queen arrives. They argue, after Phaedra tells the Queen that Lysanthir saw Freyal and Dace take the poison and that he dumped her body.

While they’re distracted, a group of Phaedra’s allies, including Ividor, Valorie, her father Phinneas II of Thane, and her half-brother, Devaki, rescue Phaedra and Pax from Lysanthir’s magic. They all fight the Queen and Lysanthir in a huge magic battle.

Phaedra is about to destroy the Taka machine when Lysanthir knocks her off the cliff with a magic explosion. Ividor collapses and dies, having been stabbed by a Dracona Dagger.

Phaedra is healed by a Maid in the water and flies back up, now with full Dracona-style wings, and destroys the machine.

The Queen and Lysanthir are put in a Supermax Prison. Phinneas becomes the new Prime Minister.

Elea Veris, one of the Kiros Three, the most powerful Humans in Kiros, breaks Lysanthir out of prison so he can work for her. She is using magically-sensitive people to control the Dragyern, a giant dragonlike species that most people think is just a legend.

She is trying to create synthetic magic, which could replace the magic supplied from the Taka machine.

They argue; Lysanthir is worried about getting caught. And indeed they are; Pax and Phaedra and some other allies find out what they’ve been doing. Elea attacks them with a Dragyern but they free it from her control and it kills her. Lysanthir doesn’t put up much of a fight and is recaptured. He tells them where the synthetic magic is being kept.

They give the synthetic magic to Phinneas, who uses it to heal the city’s infrastructure problems.
