While pleasant and heroic on the surface, deep down he believed the others were looking down at him. In 1940, he was transformed into a vampire and allowed his bitterness & the growing darkness within him to eventually consume him, though he managed to keep this a secret from the other Fighters. His transformation was known to the government who covered it up, replacing his Star-Spangled Kid sidekicks every time he ate one.
