Origin

The Immortal has been around for many, many years. He is older than the legend of King Arthur, serving as one of his legendary knights. He discovered North America, and fought in the Revolution for the revolutionaries. He even served as President under the alias of Abraham Lincoln. Later, he became a superhero and a member of the original Guardians of the Globe.

Creation

The Immortal was created by Robert Kirkman, his first appearance was in Invincible #7.

Major Story Arcs

The Immortal was seemingly killed by Omni-Man along with the rest of the Guardians of the Globe but lived up to his name when it was revealed that he survived (despite having been decapitated). He was revived by the Mauler twins, who, while reattaching his head, attempted to use a 'control beacon' to make him their slave. It did not work. The Immortal shortly thereafter survived being killed by Omni-Man a second time, this time being impaled through the abdomen and ripped in half. After the new version of the Guardians of the Globe failed to meet expectations, Immortal was brought in as a "consultant" for Robot, the team's leader, and when the team continued to underperform, Immortal was appointed the full-fledged leader in hopes of turning them around. The Immortal was married to his teenage teammate Dupli-Kate until her apparent death in Invincible #40 were she was killed in a battle with the Lizard League. Immortal in his grief would later attack Allen the Alien for almost no reason and left the team after he realized he was taking Kate's death too hard. It was later revealed that the Kate that died was another duplicate, and the Immortal began a relationship with the original Dupli-Kate.

After the Invincibles from other dimensions came to our earth and caused massive destruction Immortal was killed but after he was brought back he decided to retire along with Kate and start a family.

It was revealed that at one point, Invincible will leave Earth and leave the Immortal in charge. In doing so however, the Immortal grew distant from humanity and ruled the planet with an iron fist. Invincible was taken to the future by two twins to put an end of the Immortal's rule. He succeeded and told the twins to keep his various body parts in storage to keep them from being brought back together. The timeline has since changed since Mark is aware of this future now.

Powers/Abilities

The Immortal gained the power of "everlasting life" at some point in the distant past through as yet unknown means. His exact age is uncertain but is believed to be well over 3,000 years old. He does not age, is not susceptible to disease, has exceptional recuperative powers, almost inexhaustible endurance, limitless stamina and is invulnerable to conventional forms of harm. His flesh, while feeling much like human flesh, is capable of withstanding temperature and pressure extremes as well as concussive forces up to those of an anti-tank missile. Should the Immortal somehow be injured, he could regenerate any damaged or missing tissue. He can regrow organs and limbs in days. His head has been removed from his torso, severing his vertebrae in two, and on another occasion his upper and lower torso have been torn in half, again resulting the severing of his spinal cord. On both occasions the Immortal has fully recovered within days of the incidents. The Immortal could only die through an injury that disperses a significant portion of his body's molecules.

The Immortal is able to mentally manipulate graviton particles around himself to achieve the enviable gift of unaided flight. His top flight speed is currently unknown, but it is sufficient for him to reach escape velocity (33 times the speed of sound: 25,000 miles per hour) within seconds. The Immortal's reflexes and perceptions are enhanced in direct proportion to his movement speed, allowing him to perform complex high-velocity maneuvers with ease.

The Immortal retains the knowledge he has accumulated throughout his millennia's long lifespan and accordingly is a formidable tactician and strategist with a hundred lifetimes of experience to draw upon.
