Yanha was created by Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren in Black Cloak 1.

Major Story Arcs

Yanha is a Maid, or mermaid. They are known for their hallucinogenic cries and dangerously wide mouth and equally voracious appetites.

Master Lysanthir dumps the body of Dace, the elf girlfriend of also-deceased crown prince, Freyal III of Sidra, into the Lagoon where the Maids have been cordoned off from the rest of the city of Kiros due to the danger the Maids pose.

Freyal was stabbed by his mother the queen, but finished the act by taking poison, which he knew would be a clue raising suspicion about his death for his ex-fiance and now Black Cloak, Phaedra Essex. Dace then tragically took the poison as well, unable to continue living with Freyal dead. Lysanthir spied on their deaths and took Dace’s body away to clean up the scene.

Yanha takes a bit out of Dace’s corpse now that it’s in the Lagoon. The poison from Dace’s body transfers into Yanha, and Yanha dies soon after.

When her body is found, the double cases of poison, along with the poison in Freyal’s body, do indeed clue Phaedra into the suspicious circumstances of their deaths. She and her partner Pax follow the clues until they reveal a conspiracy headed by the queen, who killed her son Freyal to cover up a scheme she had been engaging in to prop up the city’s magic supply with ill-gotten magic taken from innocent animals, the Taka.
