Background
The captain of the Pequod who becomes obsessed with hunting the white whale that took his leg. Not much is known about his early life other than he was orphaned early in life. He began whaling at 18 and had been doing it for 40 years at the time Moby Dick takes place. His obsession dooms all of his crew to death except Ishmael. In his final battle with Moby Dick, a loop in his harpoon line gets caught around his neck and drags him into the deep alongside his nemesis. Moby Dick proceeds to destroy the Pequod and all her crew.
