Incredible Hulk

Burned by gamma energy
Burned by gamma energy

Shortly after the incident that turned him into the Incredible Hulk, Dr. Bruce Banner travels to Russia where he discovers a people whose land had long ago been fought over by the gods, in a conflict of dark versus light. The deitic force of darkness was Chernobog. Centuries of war passed until Chernobog's physical form was finally destroyed in the town Banner was staying, but some say his lingering presence haunts this cursed land. Out in the Winter cold, Bruce finds a group of tourists whose life forces are being siphoned by a spectral form of Chernobog, who craves enough energy to return to corporeal form on the Earthly plane. Banner transforms into the Hulk to fight the God of Darkness and, while Chernobog drains Hulk of a huge amount of gamma energy, its potency (no doubt due to its connection to the One Below All) burns out his spectral form and forces him to return to his mortal host body.

Bruce confronts the host, a bar owner who told the tourists and Banner of the godly conflict, and hates foreigners for treating his land like a Western frat party destination. The host attempts to summon Chernobog once more using his candlelit talisman, but Banner smashes the lamp and destroys the bar owner's link to the dark god.

Winter Guard

Joining the Winter Guard
Joining the Winter Guard

Under the leadership of Red Widow and Crimson Dynamo, a now physical manifestation of Chernobog is convinced to join Russia's Winter Guard. While on the team the God of Darkness clashes with fellow Slavic deity Perun, and the two begin fighting one-another during the Winter Guard's battle against The Avengers and the Defenders of the Deep.

Before the Winter Guard infiltrated Avengers Mountain as an act of revenge, Chernobog is present when Red Widow orders the team to find and arrest Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov. While the team is uneasy at the notion of becoming contract mercenaries or worse, contract killers, Chernobog relishes in being let off his leash. In particular he takes opportunities to speak with his teammate Darkstar, as he is intrigued by her wielding of energies from the Darkforce Dimension. The dark god claims that, in centuries past when the Slavic peoples still sacrificed to his name, the Darkforce was his domain and weapon.

Chernobog versus Perun
Chernobog versus Perun

Chernobog, Perun and Darkstar are sent after the Red Guardian near Nizhny Novgorod, the dark god must be repeatedly stopped from siphoning off "the peasants'" life force. However his interest in Darkstar permits Chernobog a modicum of mercy, and he assists in saving lives during a flood. When Perun eventually reveals that he has been speaking with and aided by Red Guardian, the team turn upon the thunder god and Chernobog takes the opportunity to savagely attack him. The two gods clash upon a mountain top with Darkstar pleading for peace between the two, until one of Perun's lightning blasts arcs towards Darkstar. Chernobog guards Darkstar and is severely wondered by the magical lightning, and reveals to Laynia that his physical host was once saved by her. This mortal affection in tandem with Chernobog's own connection to the Darkforce is why he holds Darkstar in such high regard and subconsciously wishes to protect her.

Following the Winter Guard's attack on Avengers Mountain and kidnapping of Jennifer Walters, the Guard weaponize her and lead an assault of Atlantis using this "Winter Hulk." The Avengers intervene, but Chernobog and Perun are sent to battle All-Father Thor above the ocean waves in a clash of gods. Ultimately they prove unsuccessful, and Thor triumphs the two Slavic gods in battle.

Vs. Avengers

Chernobog returns

After leaving the Winter Guard, Chernobog appears upon a cargo ship crossing the Atlantic ocean towards New York City. Chernobog is bitter following his defeat at the hands of the Avengers, and so he curses the cargo vessel under an eternal Winter cold, with the aim to spread the dark tundra across NYC once the ship makes port. The Avengers Emergency Response Squad arrive on scene and Chernobog's enchanted ship swallows them, enveloping the team inside a Winter emboldened by godly magic until Chernobog reveals himself and attacks, turning The Wasp into his thrall. While the Wasp attacks her teammates, Shang-Chi wields the Ten Rings of Ta Lo against the dark Dieva, who shrugs off the mythical weapons. Elektra manages to purge Wasp of corruption and destroys Chernobog's lantern talisman, however the Dieva merely mutates into a warrior form.

American Gods

Chernobog lives with his sisters in Chicago as an elderly man who used to kill cows in the meat packing district.
