In the Marvel Universe, Chiyou was defeated and banished 5,000 years ago at the Battle of Zhuolu by Huang Ti and three chiefs descended from the Three Sovereign deities Fu Xi, Nu-Wa, and Shen Nong. To prevent his return, the three gods bestowed three clans with each of their Divine Weapons as an oath to guard the Three Tombs of Chiyou. For generations the clans protected their respective tombs, until the removal of the Sword of Fu Xi weakened the forces binding Chiyou's spirit. Sensing this weakness, he summoned his demonic minions to free him, before the youngest heir of the Fu Xi Clan, Lin Lie, can forever repair the seals and bind the War God forever.

While Chiyou is not Lin Lie's active antagonist, much of Lie's published stories revolve around preventing the resurrection of Chiyou. When Lie's brother, Lin Feng, eventually finds the three Soul Orbs of Chiyou, the essence of the War God descends upon Feng and possesses his body. Now with a physical human form, Chiyou wages war through K'un-Lun against Lin Lie and Danny Rand, until Lie is able to channel the combined qi of Fu Xi, Shou-Lao and every citizen of K'un-Lun into a punch that removes Chiyou's possession.
