Gullivar Jones is a character from a book of the same name written by Edwin Lester Arnold. The book was very obscure and largely forgotten, but notable for predating the Barsoom series created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and sharing many characteristics, such as being pulp-series with science and fantasy aspects, some consider to have inspired the franchise in some way. Gullivar was a Lieutenant of the US Navy that was transported to Mars through a magic carpet.

Jones is a skilled swordsman and trained in combat by the US Navy standards in the late 19 Century. In Mars, due to the planet's high atmosphere, he gained superhuman strength and speed superior to its inhabitants.
