Jad-Bal-Ja first appears in Edgar Rice Burroughs' ninth Tarzan novel "Tarzan and the Golden Lion". In the novel Tarzan finds the orphaned lion cub and raises him. The name Jad-Bal-Ja means "The Golden Lion" in the lost language of Pal-ul-don.
