Judex first appeared in a French film serial of the same name released in 1916. The character is sometimes said to be a predecessor of The Shadow. Interestingly, in the 1940s, The Shadow strips were published in France under the name Judex.

In 2012, Judex was introduced into the Marvel Universe by Matt Fraction and Jamie McKelvie in the Defenders series, where he is referred to as "Judex, the Shadow".
