Mowgli is a human cub who first appeared in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
According to Rudyard Kipling, he had intended for Mowgli's name to be pronounced "mow" (rhymes with cow or vow) "gli". His daughter even obtained a verbal promise from Disney that his name would be pronounced that way in the film.
However, in the Disney film, they chose to mispronounce Mowgli's name as "moe" (rhymes with show or glow) "gli", and such is the power of Disney that almost every version of the story since has repeated the Disney way of saying his name and ignored the official way preferred by the author who created the character.
