Origin
Tars Tarkas is a fictional character in the Barsoom series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Though a great warrior and leader among his people, the brutal and mirthless Tharks, he possesses a sense of compassion and empathy uncharacteristic of his race.
Born as Tars, he gained the right to be called Tars Tarkas, after he slew a fellow Thark named Tarkas in battle. As a result, Tarkas' wife Sarkoja became his.
By slaying Tal Hajus, their Jeddak (leader), he became their next Jeddak.
Novels
In the first novel, "A Princess of Mars" (1917), with the help of the newly arrived Earthman John Carter, Tars becomes a Jeddak (king) of the Tharks.
