Origin
In the original story, the Wizard of Oz is believed to be the strongest man of magic in all the lands, even making the Wicked Witch afraid. However he was outed by Dorothy as a con man, only using this lie for respect.

Wicked (Play/Novel)
The Wizard of Oz is the main villain of the musical Wicked, tricking the Wicked Witch into helping him in bringing Oz together. He's believed to be the most powerful man in Oz, however has no real power, instead wants to turn Elphaba Thropp into his pawn, framing her as the Wicked Witch. He would prove to be a cruel man, doing whatever he must to hold onto the power, afraid that Elphaba would turn the people of Oz into seeing her as the most powerful and not him.
It was revealed in the third act, The Wizard was Elphaba's father the entire time, and it didn't stop his scheme.
