Origin

Zadok Allen first appeared in H.P. Lovecraft's short story Shadows Over Innsmouth. He tries to ward Robert Olmstead of the Deep Ones. He is later captured and presumed dead although later stories hint that he may have become a deep one himself.

When Margo Lane and Lamont Cranston are forced to make a landing in their seaplane in the small town of Innsmouth they meet town local Zadok Allen. He tells them the legend of the Deep Ones and Obed Marsh. This causes Lamont to don his alter ego, The Shadow and investigate.

The next morning Zadok watches as Lamont leaves town, leaving Margo behind to fend for herself. Zadok offer a kind word and friendly advice for the New Yorker to stay inside. Margo doesn't listen and sneaks out of the hotel after dark.

She is attacked by a fishman, who turns out be Zadok in costume. He reveals that him and other bootleggers are using Innsmouth as a port for a submarine full of illegal alcohol. He then takes Margo hostage and just when it looks like the end of Margo, the Shadow arrives and kills the bootleggers, Zadok included.

A version of this story is told to H.P. Lovecraft, which leads him to write the Shadows Over Innsmouth.
