Zwarte Piet
Zwarte Piet is a figure of Dutch folklore. A companion to Sinterklaas (Santa Claus). He delivers punishment to the bad children. He is usually depicted with whips and other instruments of corporal punishment.

According to earlier versions, Piet was a devil enslaved by Sinterklaas and forced to do the dirty job of punishing the bad children. His softer 20th century portrayal depicts him as a free man who joined Sinterklaas by choice.
