Magazine enterprises didn't have the right to use Smiley Burnette as the sidekick of Durango Kid (he was his partener in the Durango movies), so they create a similar character called Muley Pike.
Mulet was fat, coward and lazy in the first issues, but he became braver and more proactive as the series advanced, being the center of his own adventures.
