Origin

Bruin was given up to an orphanage at an early age. When his mutant ability, the characteristics of a bear, manifested, the orphanage thought he would be a danger to the children. They tracked down an "uncle" (according to Bruin) who was willing to take him in. He was a sideshow hustler who put Bruin on display at circus.

Bruin first appeared in X-Factor (2024) #2 by Mark Russell and Bob Quinn

Major Story Arcs

Krakoa

On Krakoa, the mutant island country, Bruin was employed at the Cave of Names, the official records center of Krakoa, featuring the names of all known mutants. When Orchis descended on the island, the Cave was one of their main targets. Bruin was instructed by his co-worker, Jovius, to run. From afar, Bruin saw Jovius make his stand outside of the cave, sacrificing himself. When Orchis shot through him, they triggered a deadman's switch that caused an explosion that destroyed the records.

Mutant Underground

After the fall of Krakoa, Bruin joined the new Mutant Underground, a mutant collective that would meet to share stories of struggle and the art it inspired, in order to remind each other that they are not alone, thus creating a sense of community. He was drawn to them because they united under the memory of Jovius.

The Mutant Underground became a target of the new X-Factor. Havok as team leader was sent in to get intel on them which was easy since Polaris was a member and already invited him. When the militant members caught on, the rest of the team was sent in to rescue him. Polaris and Bruin were blamed for Havok's betrayal.

They were part on trial for this betrayal. Bruin told the story of Jovius as he had witnessed it. He reminded them that the chance they took on Havok was the same chance they would have taken on any mutant. He also reminded them that they could have escaped at any moment thanks to Polaris' magnetism. The tribunal decided that Bruin and Polaris would be punished with leadership of the Mutant Underground.
