Carol Faber is a normal human in a relationship with Danny Milligan. One day they are driving along when their car went off the road. The sentient nebula Cloud, who is coming to Earth seeking help for a cosmic problem, and is unfamiliar with humans, comes into contact with them. Sensing their fear, she helps them, but also goes partly insane due to absorbing their fear. She takes on Carol's form (and later, sometimes Danny's) and loses her memory before being brainwashed by the Secret Empire.
Carol and Danny, meanwhile, survive in comas. After some years, Cloud's memory returns with the help of Seraph and the Defenders, and they find Carol and Danny, but are unable to help them.
Some time after that, Moondragon, who is possessed by the Dragon of the Moon, taunts Iceman (who loves Cloud) by putting Carol and Danny in danger. The Dragon is defeated and in her last act, Moondragon heals Carol and Danny, bringing them back to consciousness.
