Dr. Van Eyck was invited to Lichtenbad by Duke Klaus Kruger only to be held there against his will. Matt Murdock went to Castle Kruger to have his eyes checked out, and when Daredevil later showed up to stop Kruger, Van Eyck put the info together to figure out Matt was Daredevil. After seeing Daredevil put up a such a fight against Kruger, Van Eyck felt he could do no less and he sacrificed himself to stop a radio active cobalt cloud that would sweep over Earth causing billions of deaths.
