Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2015-2019)

Gideon Malick as a key head of HYDRA in Season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., portrayed by Powers Boothe.

Gideon Malick was a high-ranking HYDRA leader and political insider, raised to help fulfill HYDRA's mission of bringing Hive back to Earth. He infiltrated the World Security Council, advised Nick Fury during the Avengers' formation, and secretly pushed HYDRA's agenda. Later, he became a presidential advisor and created the ATCU to capture Inhumans for Hive.

After HYDRA's collapse, Malick teamed up with Grant Ward to complete Project Distant Star Return, ultimately succeeding in bringing Hive back through Ward's body. Though loyal at first, Malick began to question Hive after foreseeing his own death and losing his daughter to Hive's manipulation. In the end, he betrayed HYDRA and aided S.H.I.E.L.D., but was killed by a brainwashed Daisy Johnson.

Gideon Malick was raised by his father Wilfred, a devoted HYDRA member who taught Gideon and his brother Nathaniel to revere Hive, an ancient Inhuman trapped on Maveth. As boys, they witnessed their father participate in HYDRA's sacrificial rituals, admiring his dedication. After Wilfred died in 1970, Gideon vowed to carry on his legacy within HYDRA. While Nathaniel urged Gideon to attend a meeting with HYDRA's leadership - specifically Daniel Whitehall - Gideon refused, dismissing Whitehall as an irrelevant figure despite his lingering influence in the organization.

Gideon Malick resisted attending a meeting with Daniel Whitehall, dismissing him as someone their late father never respected. However, Nathaniel reminded him that the summons wasn't optional, and the brothers reluctantly agreed to go. At the Rat, Whitehall challenged their loyalty to HYDRA's old ways, mocking their family's religious traditions as outdated blood sacrifices. Malick defended his father's beliefs, but Whitehall shocked them by implying their father had cheated the selection process for sacrifices and wasn't as honorable as they thought. He urged them to read Paradise Lost in their father's study for the truth. While Nathaniel seemed shaken, Malick insisted they forget the meeting and preserve their father's legacy.

Back at the Malick Mansion, Gideon struggled to sleep before the upcoming sacrifice ceremony. He found Nathaniel in their father's study, where Nathaniel revealed he'd followed Whitehall's advice and discovered Paradise Lost - and inside it, the white stone used in HYDRA's sacrificial rituals. This proved their father had cheated for years to avoid being sent to Maveth. Though Malick initially denied it, he was forced to accept the truth: their father had lied. Still, Gideon insisted they continue HYDRA's sacred tradition properly, believing they could be better men. The brothers symbolically threw the white stone into the lake, vowing to let fate decide their sacrifice and to stick together no matter what. However, despite this oath, Gideon secretly repeated his father's trick and kept a stone for himself - betraying Nathaniel and proving he had inherited not just the legacy, but the fear too.

During their first HYDRA sacrifice ceremony, Gideon Malick secretly rigged the selection by slipping the notched white stone into the bag, just like his father had. When it came time to choose, Malick ensured he picked a black stone, leaving the white one for his brother, Nathaniel. As the group revealed their stones, Nathaniel realized he'd been chosen - and betrayed. Shocked and heartbroken, he stared at Gideon, who couldn't meet his gaze. Despite their vow to let fate decide, Gideon's fear overpowered his loyalty. Nathaniel was sacrificed to Hive through the Monolith, and Gideon stood by, consumed by guilt but too afraid to intervene.
