However, upon being exposed to gamma radiation only St. Johns' fat cells were irradiated causing them to grow at an accellerated rate. Having become a sumo-esque Hulk-like monstrosity, St. Johns lived long enough to encounter the Hulk before his body eventually burst from the pressure.
